My
earliest recollection of a Land Rover is as an ecstatic 8 year old. I really loved the
journey to the field for my riding lesson when half a dozen or more of us were bundled
into the back of an old Series IIA. I swear the thing had no springs or shock absorbers
and we certainly got more shaken up in the Land Rover than ever we were on the ponies!
Many years later I found myself at the head of a convoy of
heavily laden vehicles and trailers which were moving all our worldly belongings to our
new home. This was my most memorable journey in a Land Rover. RKX, as she was known, was a
law unto herself. Her steering was decidedly Atlantic ( i.e. there was a distinct time
lag), the brakes worked when they felt like it and the gear box and I certainly did not
agree. I declined to make a second round trip! ( Eds
note: This vehicle was entirely roadworthy and my wife has been known to exaggerate.)
